Description:
This Spencer Model 1860 Army Rifle fires a .52 caliber rimfire cartridge from a 30" barrel and is loaded from a seven-shot magazine in the buttstock by the lever action of the trigger guard. The top of the receiver is marked "SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO.BOSTON MASS. / PAT'D. MARCH 6, 1860" with serial number receiver "5599" behind breech The left barrel flat marked with the inspector initials "S.L." for Samuel Leonard (1862-1875). The front sight is a blade in a slotted base fixed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a folding ladder sight that has been cut down. There is a "V"-notch in the bottom of the sight. The stocks are two piece smooth walnut with a cut down forend, straight wrist, straight comb and steel buttplate. The buttstock houses the magazine tube. Spencer rifles are known for their use by Custer's Michigan Brigade and Wilder's Lightning Brigade. None

Chambers: Single shot lever.
Metal Condition: The metal surfaces have been refinished with minor scattered pitting and corrosion freckles. For a gun of this age this is not too bad. The butt plate shows deeper pitting over the majority of the surface.
Wood Condition: The butt stock has been refinished and the forend is cut down. The wood is in very good condition with a few minor handling marks. No dents or cracks. The rear sling loop has been removed and filled in.
Bore Condition: Semi bright bore with pitted rifling at more of the breach. The rifling is still well-defined.
Barrels: 30" barrel.
Triggers: Single trigger.
Stock Dimensions:
LOP 13 1/8".
Fore End: Wood.
Butt Pad: Metal.
Sights: "Front blade, drift adjustable rear.
