This Marlin Glenfield Model 30A was a price point version of the trued and true Marlin 336 lever action rifle. A couple of differences in the Glenfield are: standard front sight (no hood), lower cost hardwood stocks with stamped embellishments (no cut checkering), less factory configurations, and finally, this one has standard rifling (no Mocrogroove). It‚s basically a stripped down 336.
This is a \"JM\" stamped rifle, which means it was manufactured by the original Marlin company. Overall, the rifle has a lot of wear in the finish as seen in the images. Despite the wear, it appears to be mechanically sound and has pretty nice looking bore and rifling.
It appears that at some point in time, a previous owner lacquered the entire rifle, including the steel, in an effort to provide corrosion resistance. The steel underneath looks like they did some surface rust removal prior to coating it. While this is not the appropriate method to refinish the rifle, it appears to be holding up. The rear sling stud has a chip in the wood and the front is attached to the metal forent mount. If you plan to use a sling, it is recommended to verify the rear stud/screw has sufficient depth in the wood before use and move the front stud to a barrel clamp style. Either or both options can be done relatively inexpensive. Anyone with DIY experience in basic gun work can probably update both without too much trouble.
If you‚re looking for a solid \"shooter\" 30-30 and don‚t mind the outward condition of the rifle, this might be the right choice for you. It is drilled and tapped for a scope mount if you prefer magnified optics (optic and mount not included). It comes as pictured with no factory box.
