Vintage Marlin Model 31-20 – Rare Early 20-Gauge Hammerless Pump Shotgun
Offered here is an exceptional survivor: a genuine early-production Marlin Model 31-20, the 20-gauge version of Marlin’s classic hammerless takedown pump-action shotgun. Manufactured by Marlin Firearms Co. in New Haven, Connecticut, between approximately 1911 and 1923, this low three-digit serial number example ranks among the very first produced — a true piece of early 20th-century American shotgun history!
This scaled-down pump features the desirable takedown design for easy cleaning and transport, full original patent markings, a rich blued finish, beautiful walnut stock and ribbed forend, an approximately 28-inch barrel, classic brass bead front sight, and the original black hard rubber buttpad.
It displays honest, century-plus patina from a lifetime of responsible use: light scratches, handling marks, and authentic field wear on both wood and metal. Yet it remains mechanically excellent, with a bright, strong bore and smooth action — the kind of well-preserved condition collectors dream of in a gun this old.
Note: The buttpad has a small chunk missing from the bottom (typical age-related wear; see photos for details). No other mechanical issues whatsoever.
A scarce and highly collectible early Marlin pump — perfect for serious collectors of vintage American shotguns, pre-WWI Marlins, or hammerless pumps. This is the real deal: history you can hold.
