The Type 38 was the main infantry rifle of the Imperial Japanese Army, adopted in 1905 (the 38th year of the Meiji era). It’s a 6.5×50mm bolt-action rifle with a 5-round internal magazine and saw service through both the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II

The “mum" is the chrysanthemum crest, symbolizing the Emperor of Japan. On genuine military rifles that were still considered Imperial property, this crest is stamped on the top of the receiver. An intact mum means the gun wasn’t defaced or ground off, and is generally more desirable to collectors than rifles where the mum was removed
