Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique 4th Model Smith & Wesson .38 Double Action Top Break Revolver, made circa 1896-97 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Smith & Wesson Fourth Models were produced from 1895 to 1909, and this gun was manufactured at the very beginning of the production run.
Serial numbers for the 4th model ran from 322,701 to 539,300 for a total of approximately 216,600. Differences between the third model and the fourth were doing away with the rocker-type cylinder stop, along with removing the extra cuts in the cylinder. The fourth model was made from 1895 until 1909 and included 216,600 models.
The overall condition is fine. Original nickel and blue finishes are preserved. Original case colors on the trigger and hammer. The hard rubber grips have minimal wear. Markings remain crisp and legible. The action is excellent. The bore retains shine and has some light pitting toward the muzzle. Serviceable rifling. Visible number match.
