Description:
British India Pattern Brown Bess Smoothbore Musket

British India Pattern Brown Bess musket 39” barrel, 55” overall length, .75” bore. The musket features walnut stock, steel barrel and steel lock plate, hammer and frizzen pan. The trigger guard, butt plate, end cap and ramrod tubes are made from brass. The lock is engraved with the word Tower as well as a Crown over the letters GR.

The barrel is marked with various proof marks including a V over two crossed scepters. The upper tang is marked with a crown symbol above the number 2. The butt plate is stamped with the number 8. The stock has various stamps including the letters G, V, and the number 80 stamped on the left-hand side near the rear lock screw. The number 85 is stamped on the right-hand side of the stock near the butt plate. There are two separate “crown over V” symbols on the bottom near the lower tang.

The musket is in okay condition overall. The flintlock mechanism appears to be mechanically functioning. The stock has numerous nicks, dings and chips. There is one major crack in the forestock due to the woods grain that has been stabilized. Some of the pins holding the barrel to the stock have been replaced.

The upper sling swivel is missing and has been replaced with a piece of steel rod. The ramrod appears to be period but has been sanded down on one end to fit into the stock easier. The brass ramrod tube near the barrel end of the musket has two gashes in it. The barrel features pitting and patina consistent with age. The bore appears to be in good condition but has not been inspected with a bore scope. Manufactured 1790-1850.
