This is an outstanding 1968 production Colt AR15 SP1 semi-automatic rifle. It has the early style upper receiver with no provisions for a forward assist and the correct early Colt "triangle" proof mark on the upper receiver. The lower receiver has the Colt four line markings with the five digit serial number "SER SP 13437" indicating production at about Fall, 1968. This was only the fifth full year of Colt AR 15 production. It is fitted with the early original Colt marked parts such as the original non-chrome lined "Type 2" barrel with and "C" marking. This marking was used only for a couple of years on early production rifles. The right side of the barrel beneath the sight post rings is stamped with the proof "M" and triangle Colt stamping. The barrel is fitted with the early three-prong flash hider with correct ' checkered ' lock washer. The bore is beautiful and shiny. It has the Type 4 Colt bolt carrier. Since Colt did not make special SP1 commercial bolt carriers , they used the notched military carriers and simply modified the bootom back end to prevent full auto function. The rifle retains all its original internal parts. It still retains its original two-piece 'Edgewater' recoil buffer. It is also fitted with it original slimmer pistol grip, early triangular handguards (early unmarked versions lacking the "R" and "L" on the inner aluminum shields.) Features the early style buttstock. The buttstock is indeed, the early version that lacks any provisions for the internal storage compartment, that is correctly fitted with a solid rubber/plastic buttplate with no provisions for the later trap door. It also has the rubber coated swinging sling swivel and original early sling. The ejection port cover is of the earlier style having the roll pin holding in the longer spring. Also note on these earlier rifles the upper receiver cast was smoother and lighter with deeper lines. One of the nicest examples in existence! NO issues at all and this rifle is 100% correct and all original as issued in 1968! Nothing has been altered, refinished or replaced EVER! RIFLE IN FANTASTIC COLLECTOR CONDITION!
