Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Stevens/ Savage Arms Model 311A .410 Gauge Double Barrel Side by Side Shotgun, made circa 1954 in Westfield, Massachusetts. The Model 311 started as the Springfield 5000 around 1920 with model designation changing to 5100 in 1931. Around 1940 it became the Stevens Model 311 and was discontinued in 1989. This has always been a much appreciated, American made box lock Side by Side shotgun. These have always been a very popular shotgun for the American sportsman!
The .410 shotgun, often touted as a “beginner’s gun” because of its attractiveness to young shooters, is usually lightweight with thin patterns and doesn’t deliver a big charge which could potentially scare away a young shooter. The origins of the .410 go back to the end of the nineteenth century, when farmers shot birds and small game to feed their families. There wasn’t any wing shooting involved here, just pop them wherever they were and take ‘em home for mom to cook.
Overall condition is fine. Much original finish and case colors are preserved. Excellent action. The bores are shiny bright and smooth. Markings are legible. Some of the varnish is flaking, but the stock and forened are good with average handling wear.
