Pre-CIVIL WAR Era GAME GETTING .31 Caliber
Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Charles C. O’Brien Percussion Rifle made circa the 1840s-50s in Baltimore, Maryland. This hunting rifle features a 26" octagon barrel signed “C. O’Brien Balt.” on the top flat with some light foliate scroll engraving. The back action percussion lock is also signed in script for Charles O’Brien, believed to be active in Baltimore prior to 1842. It has a checkered walnut half stock with German silver escutcheons. The patchbox is particularly ornate, being large, and cast of brass, then intricately engraved. The interior of the trigger guard has the initials “MMR”.
This example’s octagon barrel is in .31 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many of the maker’s names of these percussion rifles have been lost over time.
The overall condition is good. Dark patina throughout. The stock is refinished and has multiple repairs and stable cracks. The trigger must be held forward for the hammer to hold its position. Absent ramrod and sights. The patchbox doesn’t shut. Gold banded breech. The bore is dim with good rifling. Markings remain legible.
