Description:
NSN, .58 Caliber, 40" barrel with a very good bore that has some mild pitting within the grooves. This is one of 18,000 Model 1861 muskets delivered by Welch, Brown & Co. of Norfolk, CT, to the US government between 1862 & 1863. The metal has an overall mottled plum-brown patina throughout, with some spots of bright gray near the muzzle, and patches of further bright gray on the "(Eagle) / US / NORWICH" marked, 1863-dated lock. A matching date is present on the barrel breech, and the proofs are still clear and legible. The barrel bands and ramrod have a darker brown patina, which carries over onto the trigger guard and buttplate as well. The walnut stock is in very good shape, with numerous small handling marks and blemishes scattered throughout the old military oil finish. The inspector cartouche is still clear, as is a maker’s stamp on the left side between the lock screws: "W.W. WELCH / NORFOLK Ct." The ramrod is original and matches the rest of the metal. This is a very good example of a desirable Model 1861 contract musket, and would make a nice addition to any collection. Antique;
