Description:
Serial #926, .455 Webley, 7 1/2" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome revolver that has the grooved barrel lug and ventilated holster guides. The metal has retained 92-95% of the original blue with most of the loss occurring along the barrel and on the faces and bearing surfaces of the 4th type, unfluted cylinder. Silvering is present on the bearing surfaces of the ejector mechanism and frame rails as well. The checkered walnut grips are in fine shape with minor handling marks and blemishes on either side, as well as some mild flattening of the points. The lock-up is tight, and the revolver functions flawlessly. Army & Navy CSL records list this revolver as being sold to Captain A.J. Yardley, 2nd Wiltshire Regiment, on September 16, 1903. Alexander John Yardley was born on February 28, 1866, and began his working life at 15 as a saddler. By 1897, he was enlisted in the Wiltshire Regiment, and stationed in India. QM-Sgt. Yardley was promoted to Quartermaster on April 15, 1899 (with a rank of Honorary Lieutenant), and he soon accompanied the regiment for service in South Africa, landing in Cape Town in January of 1900. He took part in operations in the Cape Colony, south of the Orange River, including Colesberg; later in Orange River Colony with further engagements at Bethlehem and Wittebergen. In November, 1900, he was promoted to Honorary Captain and was mentioned in despatches. Following the war, he was entitled to the Queen’s South African Medal with three clasps (Witteberg, Cape Colony, and Transvaal), as well as the King’s South African Medal with two clasps (1901 and 1902). After his return to England, he remained an officer in the Regular Army, and was stationed with the 2nd Battalion at Borden Camp (1904), Pembroke Dock (1906) and Dublin (1908). He competed in rifle and revolver competitions (using this revolver) and took 1st prize in the Revolver Class at the 1905 Wilts County Rifle Association annual meet at King’s Play Down, Devizes. At the 1906 annual shoot, he won the Revolver Class again, and an NRA bronze medal. He was promoted to Honorary Major in 1914, a few months before the World War began. He served in France and Belgium during the war, and was promoted yet again, to Lt. Colonel, just before retiring in December of 1919. He had served continuously as the Quartermaster of the Wiltshire Regiment for 20 years. Yardley died in 1947, at his home in Portsmouth. This is a splendid Fosbery Target revolver, used to good effect in competition by a long-serving British officer. It rates fine-excellent condition overall. FFL or C&R;
