Description:
Fine WWI Remington Mk III Flare Pistol
The WWI Remington Mark III Flare Pistol was a U.S. military signal pistol used during World War I for battlefield communication. It was manufactured by Remington Arms just a few miles away from our retail establishment in Bridgeport, CT. and is sometimes referred to as the Remington MK III Very Pistol, as it fired “Very” signal flares.

During World War I (1914–1918), reliable communication on the battlefield was difficult. Radios were limited, field phones were vulnerable to shell damage, and runners were slow and exposed. Signal pistols allowed units to:
  • Call for artillery support
  • Signal troop movements
  • Communicate prearranged commands
  • Request medical evacuation
  • Mark positions for friendly forces
The MK III was one of several signal pistols adopted by the U.S. military after America entered the war in 1917.
?? Key Specifications
  • Model: Mark III (MK III)
  • Manufacturer: Remington Arms
  • Caliber: 10-gauge flare (standard U.S. signal cartridge at the time)
  • Action: Single-shot, break-open
  • Barrel: Smoothbore
  • Frame Material: Typically brass
  • Grip Panels: Hard rubber or checkered grips
  • Finish: Often blued steel barrel with brass frame
The pistol opened by breaking the barrel downward, similar to a single-shot shotgun, allowing a flare cartridge to be inserted.
?? How It Worked
The MK III fired Very flares, which were:
  • Bright colored (red, green, white, etc.)
  • Visible over long distances
  • Used in prearranged signal codes
For example:
  • Red flare = artillery fire request
  • Green flare = advance
  • White flare = illumination
Signal codes varied by unit and operation.
?? Military Use
The MK III saw service with:
  • U.S. Army
  • U.S. Navy
  • Marine Corps
It was used both in Europe and aboard naval vessels.
??? Markings & Identification
Authentic WWI Remington MK III flare pistols typically have:
  • “REMINGTON ARMS-UNION METALLIC CTG. CO. INC.” markings
  • “MARK III” designation
  • U.S. military inspection stamps
  • A 1915–1918 production date
Fine collectible WWI piece of memorabilia.
