It features a 21-inch round barrel secured by a single band and includes a saddle ring on the left side of the receiver. The firearm utilizes Burnside’s patented copper or tapered foil cartridge ignition system, a distinctive design of the period. The lock is marked “BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. PROVIDENCE R.I.” and the breech bears “BURNSIDE’S PATENT, MAR. 25, 1856” along with a matching serial number. Manufacture date is circa 1861. Configuration details include open iron sights, a long trigger, and a straight-grip walnut buttstock. The trigger guard incorporates the Foster patented latch and catch system, and the hammer has the re-shaped contour typical of the later production models. This carbine is used and retains approximately 70–80% of its original finish, consistent with long-term preservation. Mechanical components are intact, and markings remain legible across the lockplate and breech surfaces. Included with the carbine is the original saddle ring assembly affixed to the receiver. No additional accessories or packaging are specified. The piece represents the fourth model configuration of the Burnside design, identifiable by its latch mechanism and serial range. All markings and patent inscriptions correspond to Burnside Rifle Company production from the early Civil War era.
