The bottom of the grips is marked “Geo. C. Wyatt 1st K”. George C. Wyatt was a Confederate cavalryman from Kentucky. He enlisted in Lexington in as a Private on 10 September 1862 and mustered into Company E of the Kentucky 1st Cavalry. This regiment merged with the Kentucky 3rd Cavalry to be called the 1st (3rd) according to NPS. This was commanded by Colonel J. Russell Butler and served in the Army of Tennessee until the Confederate surrender in April 1865. Per the NPS: Numerous actions in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia. Later the unit was active in the Atlanta Campaign, the defense of Savannah, and the campaign of the Carolinas. It surrendered with the Army of Tennessee in April, 1865. The field commanders were Colonel J.R. Butler, Lieutenant Colonels Jack Allen and Jacob W. Griffith, and Major J.Q. Chenoweth. The Remington New Model Army represents the second-greatest number of issued handguns found on Civil War battlefields, second only to the Colt 1860 Army. The New Model Army was the primary revolver issued to Union cavalry after the fire at the Colt's factory in 1863. The Union government acquired a total of some 122,000 of these New Model revolvers for military use, with nearly 110,000 New Models purchased by the U.S. government during the Civil War, at a cost of around $11 each.
