Description:
***** SALE PENDING HAROLD W. 2/24/2026 *****

Winchester Model 1873 early 3rd Model SRC caliber 44 WCF, serial number 115112, made and shipped February 1883 per the records on hand at the Cody Museum (email sheet is pictured and will be provided to the buyer). This was specially ordered with full nickel finish, otherwise is in standard configuration with 20" round barrel, full magazine, plain walnut stocks, plain trigger, blued and case hardened finish, brass trap door butt plate (no cleaning rods present), post front sight; has the scarce reversed carbine ladder rear sight. As typical and correct, there is no caliber marking on the brass cartridge carrier or the barrel.

CONDITION: Barrel and mag tube surfaces show just traces of the original nickel, the remainder having turned a deep plum and retain 50% coverage. Receiver retains 40% original nickel, with the blue underneath a deep plum brown at 65%. The lever exhibits 10% original nickel and the hammer exhibits 50% original nickel with some bright case colors showing where the nickel has flaked off. The saddle ring is missing but the staple is intact. Butt plate is a deep plum with some pinprick pitting and no nickel remaining. Brass trap door is a dark mustard color, never been cleaned. The cartridge carrier also is uncleaned, having 65% of the nickel remaining. Rear sight shows about 20% original nickel with clear yardage markings on the inside of the ladder and the "1873" model along the top curve. Front barrel band screw has been replaced. Barrel shows pinprick pitting along the edges above the fore arm. Stocks show typical/expected nicks, dings, bruises and scratches from 140+ years of use, with the fore arm having the common crack ahead of the barrel band and the butt stock showing weathering checks in the grain flow and filled spots where there were deep bruises. Fore arm has never been cleaned, sanded or refinished. Butt stock shows signs of cleaning and sanding at the tangs. Assembly numbers match on the toe of the butt plate, upper channel of butt stock, and lower left tang. Inside surfaces of the side plates show the number "12" indicating a match to the gun, being the last two digits of the serial number. Action is crisp with a properly working half cock safety and a strong main spring. The bore is good/shootable, I'd rate a 6 of 10, with some sharp rifling but also typical black powder pitting, no deep craters and no bulges. Lever will droop when the lever latch is released. Grades NRA Antique Good. This is a desirable caliber and configuration that will bring years of enjoyment as an addition to your Winchester collection.
