Gastinne-Renette, established in 1829, was among the most prestigious sporting gunmakers of 19th and early 20th century France, supplying royalty, nobility, and distinguished sportsmen throughout Europe and abroad. Their clientele included Napoleon III, Victor Emmanuel II of Italy, Isabella II of Spain, Russian Imperial nobility, and prominent international sportsmen — the Parisian equivalent in stature to London’s James Purdey & Sons and Holland & Holland. This elegant example weighs an ideal 6 lbs 10 1/8 oz and exhibits classic Continental best-gun architecture: • Double underbite locking with reinforcing lump • Purdey-style third fastener • Extractors • Automatic safety • Excellent original case color • Fine scroll engraving • Undisturbed, original screw slots The barrels bear Belgian proof marks and are engraved “Aug. Francotte,” reflecting collaboration with the famed Belgian maker Auguste Francotte Specifications: Gauge: 12 Chambers: 2 3/4" Bore diameter: .723 (mirror bright, as original) Chokes: Modified (.013) and Full (.028) Barrel length: accommodates up to 28 3/8" within case Weight: 6 lbs 10 1/8 oz Stock Dimensions: Length of Pull: 14 3/8" Drop at Comb: 1 5/16" Drop at Heel: 2 3/16" The well-figured walnut stock complements the gun’s lively handling and refined balance. Mechanics are crisp, and overall condition reflects careful preservation. The maker’s oak and leather case (31" x 9" x 3") appears to be of first-class English manufacture and retains steamship labels suggesting international travel and provenance. Interior includes cleaning rod and brushes. The snap cap compartment has been modified to hold 16 gauge caps but can easily be returned to 12 gauge configuration. Gastinne-Renette guns are encountered far less frequently than their London counterparts, and properly preserved, lightweight best examples such as this are particularly scarce. A refined and historically significant sporting arm from the golden age of European gunmaking. C&R accepted Shipping is $100 SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Shotgun Gauge: 12 Gauge |
