Description:
Fine Vintage 1926 Winchester Model 92 .32-20 Rifle
Up for sale is this very fine and just acquired is this very desirable Winchester Model 1892 rifle made in 1926. The Model 1892 was designed by John M. Browning, one of the most influential firearms designers in American history. Winchester asked him to design a modern, compact lever-action to replace the earlier Model 1873, and Browning delivered a working prototype in about two weeks.
Mechanically it is a scaled-down version of the Winchester Model 1886 with the same dual vertical locking lugs, giving it a strong and smooth action in a lighter package.
Winchester manufactured the Model 1892 from 1892 until 1941, with over 1 million rifles produced during that period. It was offered initially in pistol-caliber cartridges — .44-40, .38-40 and .32-20 WCF (Winchester Center Fire) . This one serial number 966968 was manufactured circa 1926.
With its lightweight, quick handling and reliability, the ‘92 became a favorite of ranchers, hunters, cowboys, frontier lawmen, and even explorers.
The .32-20 Winchester (also known as 32 WCF) was originally introduced as a practical rifle/revolver cartridge. It was popular because it allowed shooters to carry both a rifle and a revolver using the same ammunition type. A 24″ octagon barrel on a Model 1892 is noteworthy for a couple of reasons:
Octagon barrels were common in earlier vintages and are often considered more period-correct and traditional than later round barrels.
Many collectors prize original octagon barrels because they reflect early Winchester manufacturing style and give rifles distinct historical character.
An all-original, unaltered Winchester 1892 from the 1920s — especially with an octagon barrel — is considered highly desirable among collectors and vintage firearm enthusiasts. This Winchester Model 1892 bridges two American rifle eras — it’s a true 19th-century design by Browning, yet remained in production into the mid 20th century. This mix of craftsmanship, utility, and iconic cultural status makes well-preserved originals especially collectible.
This specimen retains the large majority of its original finish. The receiver has about 80% of finish with some wear especially along top edge of receiver from carrying. The barrel appears to have it all. The bore is excellent. The stock has seen light use with appropriate use marks.
The rifle has the vintage “Old Western”it and can be prominently displayed in any collection as well as mechanically fine for the shooting enthusiast. Very collectible Model 1892.
