Description:
E.W. COOK Antique SUPERPOSED Percussion SWIVEL BREECH Smooth DOUBLE RIFLE

LOCKPORT, NEW YORK 1853 Dated American SMOOTHBORE

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique E.W. Cook Superposed Swivel Breech Percussion Double Rifle made circa 1853 in Lockport, New York. This rifle features superposed barrels that revolve, each having its own bolster, nipple, and iron sights. Both of the barrels on the rifle are smoothbore. Both barrels are marked “E.W. COOK LOCKPORT N.Y. 179”. The lock is also marked “E.W. COOK”. E. W. Cook, also known as George Cook, served as a Corporal in the 103rd New York Infantry during the Civil War and was a known New York gunmaker. He enlisted on February 24, 1862, and was discharged on September 8, 1865. His military service and contributions to the Union Army during the war are documented in various records and biographies, including the battle at Antietam. He was captured twice but managed to escape and rejoin the fight. Several of his rifles used the same patch box style seen here. This straight wrist full stock comes with a trigger guard with a grip extension. Included with the rifle is a wooden ramrod with brass tip.

From the time that firearms were introduced, gunsmiths had experimented with various ways to turn those single shot weapons into multi-shot weapons. Prior to the use of “repeating” arms, one of the most successful systems was to use multiple barrels, each with their own load and charge. In the early United States, many pocket pistols were produced with two or four barrels, and sometimes even more.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bores are good for their ages. Legible markings. This example sports a solid stock with a stable crack on the bottom. Some wiggle is present at the swivel.
