The Zanardini Model 403 “Oxford” in 9.3x74R is a refined continental double rifle built for serious hunting while retaining unmistakable Italian artistry. Serial number 11910, this example features 23.75" barrels, classic double triggers with articulated front trigger, ejectors, and a non-automatic safety. Weighing 7 lb 12.8 oz with a 14.375" LOP, it balances beautifully—quick between the hands yet substantial enough for the authoritative 9.3x74R cartridge. Express sights consist of a standing rear on a quarter rib with a ramped front, properly configured for driven game or dangerous game at practical distances. The bores are bright with sharp rifling, the action is smooth and locks up tight, and the rifle appears to have seen little, if any, use. Mechanically, it is excellent.
Aesthetically, this Oxford model is striking. The action retains nearly all of its original case color, complemented by barrels that preserve almost all original blue. Light scroll engraving flows across the action body, while the bottom plate features a finely engraved Cape buffalo with “MOD. 403 OXFORD” above and “EXCLUSIVE” below. The pierced top lever is adorned with a sculpted wild boar, and the extended bottom tang terminates in a case-colored pistol grip cap. The beautifully figured walnut stock displays scalloped grain, sharp checkering, inlaid bone teardrops, and a beavertail forend. Sling swivels are properly fitted to the barrel rib and stock belly. Elegant, powerful, and mechanically precise, this Zanardini represents a superb example of modern bespoke Italian double rifle craftsmanship in one of Europe’s most respected big-game chamberings.
