Description:
21-5/8 inch round barrel chambered in 52 caliber with a bore that has well defined rifling but scattered pitting. Barrel is a smooth brown patina and has no markings. Sights include a brass blade front and a short single leaf "squirrel ear" rear. Receiver, hammer and lever have silvered out to a smooth dark gray with traces of blue. It has the Maynard Tape Primer system. The upper tang is marked "C. SHARPS/PATENT/1848" followed by the serial number. The primer cover is stamped "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/1845". Most of the higher grade carbines have a forearm band but no sling ring bar. Walnut varnished stock has a slight pattern to the grain and is in fine condition with most all of a refinished varnish remaining with scattered minor dents and dings. Engraved with light floral scrollwork. Engraving is sharp. The brass patch box is engraved as well. This seems to have more engraving coverage than what you usually encounter on these carbines. This factory engraved Sharps was one of only 59 .52 caliber Model 1851 carbines listed in the original factory records with regular engraving per Frank Sellers on page 44 of "Sharps Firearms." This is probably one of the finest ones in existence. I have had it in my personal collection for several years. This is a great original gun that would be hard to improve upon.
