Description:
Fine WWII Rock Island Arsenal Rebuild 1903 .30-06 Rifle
Offered here for sale and just acquired is a very fine Springfield Model 1903 .30-06 rifle made at the Rock Island Arsenal in 1944. A U.S. Issue Model 1903 .30-06 rifle serial number 314225 it was made at Rock Island Arsenal but rebuilt during WWII. The specimen has a 25" High Standard BARREL with parkerized finish and stamped with the date 5-44. Most probably an arsenal replacement unmarked stock as well . Bore is excellent and the rifle appears to have seen very little if any use. The bolt has an etched replacement number and rifle has combination of parkerized finish with blued parts as well. Fine example of a WWII U.S. Arsenal rebuild 1903 rifle.
This M1903 Springfield is chambered in .30-06, originally produced at Rock Island Arsenal — and later overhauled during World War II. Here’s a breakdown of what your details indicate:

Serial Number 314,225 — Rock Island Production
Serial number 314,225 places production at Rock Island Arsenal in 1918.This is significant because Rock Island rifles below serial 285,507 are considered “low-number” and potentially brittle due to early heat-treatment methods. This serial number (314,225) is above the low-number range, meaning it should be a double heat-treated receiver, which collectors consider safe to shoot with standard .30-06 ammunition.
The date 5-44 High Standard Barrel (25", Parkerized)
barrel marked indicates manufactured May 1944 and produced by High Standard. During WWII, High Standard produced replacement barrels for Springfield 1903 rifles as part of U.S. arsenal refurbishment programs.
The parkerized finish is correct for WWII-era refinishing. Some small parts remaining blued (common in rebuilds). Unmarked replacement stock is very typical. Mixed finish components and replacement bolt with etched number (arsenal renumbering practice). During WWII, rifles were pulled from storage, rebuilt to serviceable condition, and reissued for service. They were not concerned with collector “correctness” — only function. Also many arsenal rebuild stocks were left without inspector cartouches, especially late-war replacements.
Electro-pencil or etched numbers on bolts were common in arsenal rebuilds to match bolt to receiver, maintain headspace control or keep parts from being mixed again.
A legitimate WWII arsenal rebuild. By May 1944, the U.S. was deep into WWII production of the M1 Garand, but 1903 rifles were still being rebuilt for training and sniper use. It represents a WWII-era refurbishment of a WWI receiver, which is historically interesting in its own right.
