It began its life about 1864 as a rimfire/percussion gun. Somewhere along the way the the nipple for the percussion was removed and replaced with a firing pin system. It is a rimfire/centerfire gun. It will shoot 44-40s or the 44 rimfire if you can find them. Given the age of the gun and its metalurgy I treated it strength wise as an original colt lightnening pump when reloading for it. I used 6 gr of Unique powder with a soft cast bullet 44-40 bullet. It will shoot point of aim/ point of impact at 100 yards with this load. It has a 28" full length octagon barrel with a nearly perfect bore, a rocky mountain style front sight, a barrel sight and a rare early factory tang sight. The ejector works just fine. The gun has nice wood with some figure. There is a piece of wood thats been missing from the left side of the Forearm, just forward of the receiver for a very long time. The brass tip is solid and heavy. There are no cracks in the butt stock. It has markings on the octagon flats for Ball and Williams; Merwin and Bray, agents New York, and then the Ballard name and patent date. Its an antique so I can ship it directly to you. You will pay the actual shipping via FedEx. SOLD |
