This is one of the finest examples I’ve seen of a true early Model 1873 without any alterations or arsenal upgrades. It retains the correct long wrist/short comb stock with clear and sharp “ESA” cartouche along with the circle “P” firing proof. The hammer also has the early coarse checkering and the breech block is of the early high arch type. The lock plate is correctly dated 1873. The correct rear sight is graduated to “4” on the side and retains the slotless screws. It also has the early style cleaning rod. Still some light case color on the upper tang and breech block which is correctly marked “MODEL 1873” with eagle and crossed arrows. The barrel has the correct small “VP” with eagle head proof which is correct for rifles in the 40,000-60,000 serial range. This example still retains about all the barrel blue that shows a hint of plum only from age. Good blue on the barrel bands and screw heads. The trigger guard shows fine blue with light wear. Has the correct two click tumbler. The stock shows only light handling marks and has a “12” rack number lightly stamped ahead of the butt plate on the top portion. There is one very minor age crack coming forward from the front receiver screw on the left side- hardly noticeable. Action is tight and the bore is fairly bright with only some minor scattered corrosion and sharp rifling. A great and historic 151 year old Springfield .45-70 from the Pre-Custer Indian Wars era.
