Description:
The Model 788 was produced as a "budget" rifle from 1967-83. This one is the carbine version which was introduced late in the production and, consequently, is a bit rarer. To keep costs down it was made with birch or elm stocks later in the production run. While it was a woods runner's budget rifle, it shot like crazy, equal to or better than its bigger (and more expensive) cousin, the Model 700. In part this was due to a lock time advertised at 2.5 milliseconds, and also due to the very stiff receiver. Remington didn't scrimp on metal. The rifle is different from most in that in had a nine-lug rear lock, allowing for a 60-degree bolt rotation from lock to open. These rifles were generally purchased as "tools" for people to hunt.
