Description: Scarce Transitional Colt Courier .22 Revolver w/2” BBL C. 1953-54 Offered here for sale and just acquired is this tell me about what appears to be an early transitional Colt Courier .22 caliber revolver with serial number 11008LW. This barrel has no markings and the left side of frame has a different flat frame screw. Revolver has original Colt .wood grips. This specimen has seen only light use and aside from wear along the high points of frame the revolver would be 99%. There is just a small patch of wear or fault on the rear edge left side of frame forward of trigger guard. With our retain operation and gallery in Southport, CT we have over our more than 50 years in the business been able to acquire thousands of collectible firearms including prototypes, factory take home guns, show guns, etc from companies such as Colt, Remington, Winchester, Ruger-to name a few and we have been able to pass these into the hands of collectors. This specimen appears to be a scarce example of the Colt Courier rimfire revolver, one of Colt’s short-lived lightweight “D-frame” pocket revolvers. Based on its very very low serial number (11008LW), alloy frame indicators, and unusual features—this is likely an early production / transitional Courier from the first year or two of manufacture. The Colt's Manufacturing Company produced the Courier only for a short time:
Collectors often consider these “first-series” or transitional Couriers, assembled while Colt was still refining the model after introduction. Early Couriers often show parts carry-over and small design changes as Colt adapted the design from the Cobra/Detective Special platform. These include mixed screw types (noting left side of frame has a different flat frame screw. Early Couriers often show different sideplate screw head shapes (i.e. screws sourced from early Cobra or Detective Special parts bins. Colt frequently used existing inventory during early production runs. The 2” has no markings. This is important as it is possibly an early pre-production barrel or experimental factory snub conversion. The Courier was intended as a slightly longer-barreled pocket revolver than the snubnose Detective Special. The typical configuration was a 3 inch barrel with exposed ejector rod and short grip frame. This specimen-a 2-inch Courier is unusual as it may have been a factory cut for special order or test. Occasionally Colt would produce short-barrel test or special order guns. A handful of Couriers were reportedly assembled while Colt was experimenting with barrel lengths. In addition this revolver has original Coltwood grips. Many examples have heavy anodizing wear, frame scratches(soft aluminum) and grip shrinkage. These grips are nicely placed. Aside from condition explained images just show minor oil residue in protected areas which we will clean before shipping. A low-serial transitional piece with possible factory oddities could exceed the value offered with factory documentation letter.
