The Smith & Wesson \"Pre-Model 17\" refers to the K-22 Masterpiece, a rimfire target revolver manufactured post-WWII between 1946 and 1957. Widely considered one of the finest rimfire revolvers ever made, it was officially designated the Model 17 in late 1957 when S&W transitioned to numerical model naming.
Key Features and Identification
The \"Five-Screw\" Frame: Early Post-War models (1946–1955) feature five screws: four on the sideplate and one in front of the trigger guard. A transition to four screws occurred around 1955.
Pinned Barrel & Recessed Cylinder: These revolvers have a barrel secured by a pin and a cylinder with recessed chambers that allow the rim of the .22 LR cartridge to sit flush.
Sights & Rib: Standard configuration includes a 6-inch pinned barrel with a serrated top rib and micrometer-adjustable rear target sights.
