Outstanding Browning Pocket Auto .25 Pistol C. 1968
Offered here for sale and just acquired is this vintage superb conditioned Browning pocket .25 auto pistol. Based on the serial number 4,186,125, this Baby Browning was most likely manufactured in 1968 by Fabrique Nationale (FN) Herstal in Herstal, Belgium.
The pistol traces back to designs by legendary firearms inventor John Moses Browning. After his earlier vest-pocket pistols became popular, FN improved the concept. The modern Baby Browning was designed in the late 1920s by Dieudonné Saive, who later created the Browning Hi?Power pistol.
Production of the Baby Browning began in 1931, chambered in .25 ACP (6.35 mm) and holding 6 rounds in the magazine.
The pistol became one of the most widely carried pocket pistols of the 20th century because it was:
- Extremely small and lightweight (about 275 g / 9.7 oz)
- Simple blowback semi-automatic design
- Reliable and easy to conceal
- 1968: the U.S. passed the Gun Control Act of 1968, which banned import of many small pistols, including the Baby Browning.
- After this, FN exports to the U.S. largely stopped.
Aside from the original magazine which came with the pistol the gun shows very little if any use. The pistol itself retains all blued finish. The grips are excellent. The bore as well. Only the magazine has a small patch of “pin-prick” patina on one side.
