This example features a British Pattern 1853 rifle that went through the Confederate cleaning and repair (“C&R”) system for reissue. Between 200,000 and 250,000 firearms were refurbished at locations like Danville, Staunton, Lynchburg, and Richmond. The rifle bears a Confederate inspector’s stamp “Q” just forward of the trigger guard, though the inspector’s identity remains unknown. The “Q” and “Z” stamps, documented in Steven Knott’s 2019 study, indicate the work of Confederate inspectors—“Z” being associated with Capt. Louis Zimmer, who oversaw C&R operations in Richmond late in the war. Knott estimates that up to 200,000 captured or collected weapons, along with 50,000 turned in by Confederate forces, passed through the C&R system, mainly from eastern battlefields. The overall condition is good. Brown patina. The middle barrel band is absent. Replacement nipple. Excellent action. The bore is the correct size but very little rifling left.
