Description: Antique Victorian era military snake belt buckle or serpent clasp dating to approximately the mid-19th century through the late Victorian period. This style of buckle was widely used on British military waist belts during the Victorian era and remained in use with volunteer and colonial units into the early 20th century. The design features a cast brass serpent forming an S?shaped clasp which hooks into the opposite side of the belt. The buckle consists of two oval belt bars connected by a cast brass serpent body with detailed scale pattern and twin snake heads. Leather belt ends would pass through the bars, allowing the snake hook to secure the belt at the waist. Snake belt clasps became a distinctive feature of Victorian military dress belts and are now collected as examples of 19th-century military accoutrement. Condition is good antique condition with natural patina and wear consistent with age. The buckle remains structurally sound and displays well. Period: circa 1860–1900 Material: Cast brass Design: Serpent / snake clasp waist belt buckle SOLD |
