This round brass belt plate features the Seal of the Commonwealth of Virginia depicting Virtus standing over the fallen figure of Tyranny with the motto “Sic Semper Tyrannis” (“Thus Always to Tyrants”). The central seal disk is surrounded by a decorative wreath border typical of Virginia militia and ceremonial belt plates of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The plate is constructed of cast brass with a separate applied center seal mounted within the wreath frame. The reverse retains the original belt bar attachments used to secure the plate to a leather belt. Virginia state seal plates of this type were commonly worn on militia or ceremonial uniform belts during the post-Civil War militia era as states organized volunteer military units in the late 1800s. Condition shows honest wear and natural patina consistent with age. The plate remains structurally sound and displays well as an example of historic American militia belt hardware. Period: circa 1870–1910 Material: Brass Design: Virginia State Seal – “Sic Semper Tyrannis” SOLD |
