Description:
Offered is an original oval brass belt plate bearing the raised letters “OVM,” representing the Ohio Volunteer Militia.
These plates were worn on waist belts by members of the Ohio militia prior to and during the American Civil War period.

The plate features the correct construction typical of mid-19th century militia belt plates, including two arrow-shaped belt
hooks and a single tongue catch on the reverse. The front displays the raised OVM monogram with an applied oval boss above
the letters, a style commonly associated with Ohio militia equipment of the 1850s-1860s.

The Ohio Volunteer Militia served as the organized state militia prior to the Civil War. When the war began in 1861, many
members of these militia companies formed the core of Ohio volunteer regiments entering Union service. Militia belt plates
such as this are therefore closely associated with early Civil War military history.

Condition: Good antique condition with natural age patina and wear consistent with long-term use and storage. The attachment
hooks and catch remain intact and functional.

Period: Circa 1855-1865
Material: Brass
Origin: United States (Ohio)
Design: “OVM” - Ohio Volunteer Militia
