Description:
Offered is an original brass militia belt plate bearing the raised letters “C.S.A.” This plate is associated with the
California State Artillery, a component of the California state militia active during the mid-19th century and the American
Civil War period.
The plate features a rectangular brass body with applied letters “C.S.A.” and visible rivets securing the letters to the
face of the plate. The reverse retains the correct three?point attachment system typical of militia belt plates of the era,
including a single belt catch at the top and two belt hooks at the bottom.
Militia units such as the California State Artillery served to protect coastal defenses, federal installations, and maintain
state security during the Civil War period. Belt plates of this pattern were worn on leather waist belts as part of the
uniform of state militia artillery companies.
Condition: Good antique condition with natural age patina and wear consistent with period use. Hardware on the reverse
remains intact and functional.
