Description:
Offered is an antique brass rectangular belt plate bearing the raised letters “CS.” Plates of this style are
associated with Confederate States military equipment used during the American Civil War (1861-1865).

The plate features applied brass letters “C.S.” on a recessed field and a raised border frame. This style of
construction is consistent with Confederate wartime production where small regional foundries and workshops
produced uniform equipment using casting and hand?finished methods.

The reverse retains the typical Confederate attachment configuration with two belt hooks at the top and a single
tongue catch at the bottom used to secure the plate to a leather waist belt.

Confederate plates marked “CS” represent the initials for Confederate States of America and were worn by soldiers
serving in various Confederate units during the Civil War. Because of the South’s limited industrial capability
during the war, many buckles exhibit variation in finish and detail, making each example somewhat unique.

Condition: Good antique condition with natural age patina and honest wear consistent with period use. The reverse
hooks and catch remain intact and functional. The plate displays well with attractive surface character.

Period: Circa 1861-1865
Material: Brass
Origin: Confederate States of America
