This style of buckle was introduced with the 1902 U.S. Army uniform regulations and was worn by commissioned officers on the ceremonial sword belt. The design features a circular wreath composed of oak leaves surrounding a raised American eagle with shield and stars, symbolizing the authority of the United States Army. The plate is constructed of brass with a separate applied eagle device mounted to the wreath. The top rectangular hanger bar was designed to attach to the officer’s sword belt. The reverse of the plate shows the typical casting texture along with an assembly number stamp “53,” which was commonly used by manufacturers for production or inspection identification. The reverse shows a raised mounting post terminating in a faceted star-shaped stud, which would have secured the hanger to a belt or associated strap system. This style of hardware was commonly used on officer’s sword belts and ceremonial military equipment during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These plates were commonly worn during the early 20th century and are frequently associated with the period spanning the Spanish-American War era through World War I, though they continued to appear in ceremonial use later as well. Condition: The plate remains in good original condition with natural age patina and honest surface wear consistent with age and use. The eagle device and wreath details remain well defined. The hanger bar and fittings remain intact. Specifications: Pattern: U.S. Army Officer Sword Belt Plate (Model 1902) Material: Brass Construction: Two-piece plate with applied eagle device Marking: Reverse stamped “53” Period: Circa 1902 - World War I era This is a solid original example of a classic U.S. Army officer’s dress belt plate and makes a fine addition to a military buckle, uniform, or early 20th century U.S. Army collection.
