Description: Guns Listing ID: 631322 Up forhere we have an excellent example of American rifle history. This pair of rifles was handed down through two generations, originally from a grandfather who was a shooter and hunter active in the 1920s - 1950s. The pair of rifles offered here are a 1903 Springfield National Match in .30-06 and a Springfield 1922 M1 Cadet Trainer in .22 LR. The original owner had the rifles restocked in walnut with matching stocks. There are no maker’s marks in the stocks. The work was clearly done by a talented stockmaker, showing exceptional inletting and perfectly-executed hand checkering. The 1903 Springfield chambered in 30-06 has a barrel manufacturing mark of 6-28. Serial number records show armory assembly in 1929. The barrel has a National Match star stamped at six o’clock on the muzzle. Lore has it that barrels so marked were determined to be exceptionally manufactured, measured with a star gauge that showed potential for enhanced accuracy suitable for competition. While Capt. E.C. Crosman doubted this in print in the 1930s, it has never been proven and the actual facts are lost to history. The Springfield Model 1922 is a trainer model chambered in .22 Long Rifle. There were two models, M1 and M2. This is an M1 as stamped on the front receiver ring. We believe the rifle was part of the variant run made specifically for the National Rifle Association’s Department of Civilian Marksmanship program. These were introduced in 1925. The barrel on this rifle is stamped with a manufacture date of 8-26. These trainer rifles were made to replicate the 1903 Springfield in weight and dimensions to teach marksmanship without the punishment of repeated recoil, and the expense of the larger centerfire .30-06 cartridge. Both rifles are set up with original Lyman receiver peep sights. The sight on the 1922 is missing the windage screw and knob. Bores are bright with very good rifling throughout. Stocks show expected handling marks. The toe of the stock on the 1922 has a small chip just at the edge of the buttplate. The Zeiss scope, with original case and leather cover, was made in the late 1920s to early 1930s, as was the exceptional mounting device that re-zeroes on both rifles. Thanks for looking and good luck to all s!
