Description:
A custom built Hawken style rifle. Not to be confused with Thompson Center Hawken.  This Hawken was made of a curly maple, with an attractive stripe and mounted with browned iron furniture except for the barrel key escutcheons  which are brass.  The hand inlet work around the lock is near perfect, on other furniture not as good.  The barrel is fit with a very fancy rear sight. It is  adjustable for elevation and wind-edge. The front sight is a classic Rocky Mountain sight. This is a hand made rifle, but I find no makers name. It has a well browned smooth barrel and lock marked “J S Hawken ”. After the original Hawken Bros. The barrel is 1 1/8 inches from flat to flat, and is 35 1/2 inches in length. The overall length of this rifle is 52 inches. The set trigger and lock function as they should . Stock is beautifully striped Tiger Maple with the LOP 14 1/2”. Period correct rust browned on the octagon barrel that has a bright bore with 8 grooves and lands. Weight is just over 13 pounds. The bore is .54 caliber, with a 1 in 65 twist. A museum quality rifle that is suitable for hide harvesting on a buffalo stand or target shooting over crossed sticks or Bench shooting at the range. This rifle required many hours of hand labor.  A true bargain made by a talented rifle smith from top quality parts. This original piece of the rifle makers art has been used but has been very well maintained.
