The Colt factory letter confirms the configuration as well as the shipment on January 13, 1900 to Lewis Bros. & Company in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on behalf of Captain Curran, as part of a 100 gun shipment. Curran received hundreds of Colt revolvers, both the Model 1878 as well as the New Service in .45 Colt during this time because the 2nd Boer War (1899-1902) was heating up and Canadian volunteers were being recruited and needed to be armed. This large double action revolver was cutting edge at the time and a fantastic choice of sidearm. This one is inscribed to Frank Stanley Morrison (Morison in some of the records) and puts him in South Africa in 1900. He was born in 1881 at Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada. He was 19 years of age when he volunteered, though one record stated he was 22 (perhaps padding his age to be able to go to South Africa) leaving his job as a bank clerk to become a Private in the Royal Canadian Dragoons (1st Battalion Mounted Rifles, 6th Regiment). Records show several specific occasions where he acted with bravery and coolheadedness under fire. He was injured and sent home but went back to South Africa after recovering having been made a lieutenant. Records show he was at Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Cape Colony, and Orange Free State. He was made a captain and was sent to Europe circa September 1914 with the Expeditionary Force at the beginning of World War I, where he again served with distinction. Over his career as a soldier in both wars he was awarded the Queen’s Medal for Bravery with four clasps, the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) as well as the Companion of the Order of St. Michael & St. George (CMG). The King of Montenegro awarded him the Order of Danilo in connection to his service during the Great War. In 1920 he was awarded the French Medaille d’Honneur by the President of France. The note for his DSO states: For conspicuous gallantry and ability on 20th May 1915, when he commanded the leading company, in the attack on the orchard at La Quinque Rue. Capt. Morison captured the enemy’s position, which was of primary importance, under heavy shrapnel, rifle, and machine gun fire. London Gazette No. 29275 dated 8/25/1915. This action occurred near Festubert and these machine gun nests gave the Allies much trouble and casualties on their way through the area, just after many had just been gassed at Ypres. Morrison was with the 16th Battalion Canadian Infantry under Alderson’s Force. In the course of the war he was promoted to Major, Lt. Colonel, and full Colonel. After the war he was a manager at Calders Ltd. in London. When the Second World War began, he returned to Canada to take an appointment from the Canadian Minister of Supply & Munitions as comptroller of Clarke Ruse Aircraft Co. He retired in 1958 and passed away in 1969. The overall condition is good. Fine original blue finish on the left side of the gun, with a mottled patina on the right side of the gun. The action is excellent in both double and single action modes. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The Colt trademark grips are in good condition. Numbers on the frame and crane are matching. Clear inscription. A great piece of Canadian, British, South African, Boer War, and World War I history! Own the original!
