The Smith & Wesson M&P40 Shield is a slim, striker-fired subcompact pistol designed specifically for concealed carry. It was a market-disrupting design when released, offering the power of the .40 S&W cartridge in a "single-stack" profile that is only 0.95 inches wide. Because the .40 S&W is a high-pressure round, this 3.1-inch barrel model is known for having "snappy" recoil compared to the 9mm version. Many shooters prefer the extended 7-round magazine for this caliber as it provides a full three-finger grip, offering significantly better control during rapid fire. .40 S&W
