Description:
Historic Remington President’s Documented SW 36 .38 Revolver

Offered here for sale is another superb and historic firearm from Hansen & Hansen. Throughout our more than 5 decades in the business and with our retail shop and gallery in the “heart” of gun country we have acquired may, many historic guns from the top companies who had their headquarters or offices in Connecticut. Colt, Winchester, Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Remington and many more we have acquired “special” guns from company heads, employees, family members over the years. Prototypes, show display guns, factory errors and employee “take home” specimens-we have had them all.
This is another special one. This superb model 36 Smith & Wesson Chiefs Special .38 revolver was owned by a longtime Remington Arms company president in the 1960-70s-R.H. Coleman and was acquired years ago from a member of his estate.
Roland H. Coleman served as president of Remington from about 1963 to 1974 . His presidency coincided with a transitional era for Remington-diversification into consumer non firearm products and continued dominance in sporting firearmsas well as the beginning of the shift away from older northeastern industrial sites toward newer facilities in the South.
He headed Remington in Connecticut (including the 1960s) in Bridgeport, which was a major Remington center. The company inherited a huge complex there through its merger with the Union Metallic Cartridge Company in 1912 then on, Bridgeport became the corporate headquarters of Remington-UMC and a major ammunition production site . By the early 20th century the plant was enormous (13 buildings, tens of thousands of workers at peak) . It produced small-arms ammunition on a massive scale, especially during World War I and II. Even after there was movement out of the East it still housed executive and administrative functions during much of the mid-20th century. Senior leadership (including presidents like Coleman) were tied to this legacy HQ structure, even as operations became more geographically dispersed.
This specimen, a classic Smith & Wesson Model 36 Chiefs Special with 3” barrel appears to be in 99%+  condition and comes in its original factory box with instructions and warranty. Just a partial slight cylinder turn mark otherwise 100%. Most importantly for the collector included is the ORIGINAl factory invoice from Smith & Wesson documenting that it was shipped on December-6-1967 to R.H. Coleman. Because of the date of shipment this may have been a special high level “gift” from S&W to Coleman at Remington or perhaps a gift from Coleman to a special friend. Nonetheless this important collectible was acquired decades ago from the individual whose prestigious collection we acquired recently.
That letter is included with purchase along with a documentation letter from Hansen & Hansen denoting the acquisition. An excellent collector piece for anyone especially the S&W or Remington collector.
