Description:
VERY EARLY CIVILIAN SINGLE ACTION ARMY, .45 COLT, 7 ½” BARREL, FACTORY LETTEER, #24XXX MADE 1876. This is an extremely early Civilian SAA as many during this time were shipped to the U.S. Government and so marked. The factory letter from 1977 confirms that this revolver was shipped to Spies, Kissam & Co., New York, New York on march 31, 1876 with 50 in the shipment. Overall displays an uncleaned aged brown patina with only a few minor spots of surface pitting on the barrel. There is some aged plum/brown on the top of the barrel and in protected areas. Matching numbers on the frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder and barrel (under the ejector housing where there is still fairly good blue!). Only the ejector head is a later replacement as the original “bullseye ejector head” was somewhat fragile and could break off if stressed. The ejector head on this Colt is aged perfectly to the rest of the gun and was no doubt replaced while this revolver was still in use. Importantly, the housing is the correct style used from serial numbers 21,000-45,000 (1875-1878) and the patent dates on the frame are in two lines with only the Sept. 19, 1871 over July 2, 1872 stamping as was used on serial numbers 25-33,000 from 1873-1877. The one piece walnut grips are fine with some tiny chipping at the corners and a little rounding at the bottom edge. Looks like some protective varnish was added at some time long ago with traces remaining and some thin filler on the extreme bottom by the butt. Tight mechanically, four clicks to the correct style hammer, excellent markings, fine screw heads and surprisingly exc. bore that is only a little dark with strong rifling all the way through. Also comes with an undated handwritten letter from the previous owner describing this revolver. He mentions an "X" scratched on a cylinder chamber meant to indicate the "safe" or unloaded chamber- interesting! Front sight has not been altered or filed. A chance to own an uncleaned super early Single Action at an attractive price. $5800.
