Description:
The Browning A-Bolt Medallion .22 is a highly sought-after, discontinued rimfire rifle known for its "miniature big-game rifle" feel and premium aesthetics. Manufactured by Miroku in Japan, it was produced between 1986 and 1996.
Key Specifications
- Action: Bolt-action with a short 60-degree bolt throw, providing excellent scope clearance and fast cycling.
- Calibers: Primarily chambered in .22 LR
- Barrel: 22-inch free-floating barrel with a high-luster blued finish and a recessed target crown.
- Stock: High-gloss American walnut with a rosewood grip cap and forend tip.
- Magazine: Uses a 5-round detachable box magazine; an optional 15-round version was historically available. Note I have the extended clip as well.
- Weight: Approximately 5 lbs 9 oz (unscoped).
Distinguishing Features
- Medallion Styling: Features detailed checkering, a gold-plated adjustable trigger, and a high-polish finish that mimics the full-sized A-Bolt centerfire rifles.
- Safety: Thumb-operated top-tang safety, similar to the design found on many shotguns.
- Accuracy: Renowned for exceptional precision; users frequently report "one-hole" groups at 50 yards with quality ammunition.
- Build Quality: Unlike many modern rimfire rifles that use plastic components, the A-Bolt .22 features a machined steel receiver and a polished aluminum trigger guard.
- Stock: Note the exceptional figure in the stock. This is a high gloss finish and there are markings in the finish but nothing that could not be cleaned upo.
Collectibility and Value
Because it was only produced for a decade, the A-Bolt .22 is considered rare.
- Original Price: Approx. $450–$550 (late 1980s). This medalion was $550. My. house was purchased for 76k and worth 600k today.
- Current Market Value: Well-maintained used models typically command $1,000, depending on the specific grade and condition not factored in. This is a Medallion grade with exceptional wood.
- Scope: The scope is a Browning 2x7 variable. Vintage Browning 2x-7x rifle scopes, particularly those produced between 1965 and 1972, are considered relatively rare and collectible. These 1-inch tube, high-quality Japanese-made optics. Made to last. The ruper on the variable is still soft.
The 2-7x magnification range is versatile, making it popular for hunters, but finding them in good condition with clear optics can be challenging due to their age.
- Worth: A vintage Browning 2x-7x scope in good to excellent condition can be worth approximately $300 to $600+, depending on the clarity of the glass, the condition of the coating, and whether it includes original mounts or rings.
