Description:
Serial #2605, .450 BPE, 26" barrels with fine, bright bores that have some mild freckling within the grooves along their lengths. This is a handsome double rifle that has retained about 70-75% of the bluing along the barrels, with silvering at the muzzles and breeches, as well as thin, hairline scratches along the sides of either side. The original express rear sight and sporting bead front sight are present, with some added white paint to the latter for better visibility. The frame has an overall dark gray patina with muted color case-hardening still visible, still quite bright on on the water table and protected areas. Tight English scrollwork engraving is present throughout. Both locks are fully functional with the hammers locking firmly at both half and full-cock. The sliding safety catches are still functional as well. The checkered walnut forend and pistol-grip stock are in very good condition with small handling marks and blemishes scattered throughout, some light-moderate flattening of the checkering points, and a few narrow splinters missing from around the lockplate inletting on the right side. The LOP measures 13 7/8" to the original steel buttplate, with drops of 1 1/2" and 2" respectively. The barrel lock-up is still tight and the underlever locks in place firmly. The gun is housed in a modern leather covered traveling case with dark maroon baize lining. Thomas Turner was a well-known Birmingham maker who was in operation from 1805 & 1890. This is a very good-near fine example of a British Express Double Rifle, and would make a splendid addition to a collection. Antique;
