The Beretta 96 D is the Double-Action Only (DAO) variant of the Beretta 96, which is the .40 S&W version of the famous 92FS (M9) platform. The "D" designation signifies that the pistol has no external safety or decocking lever and features a consistent, bobbed hammer for a snag-free profile. While the standard Beretta 96 has a 4.9-inch barrel, the version with a 4.25-inch barrel is known as the 96 D Centurion. Because it is DAO, there is no manual safety or decocker on the slide, making it thinner and less likely to snag on clothing during a draw. The Beretta 96 D was primarily designed for law enforcement agencies that preferred the simplicity and perceived safety of a consistent double-action trigger without the complexity of a manual safety. .40 S&W
