Description:
Smith transitioned the Terrier from .38 S&W to .38 Special in 1950, when it became the Chiefs Special.  The I-frame model only lasted until 1953, when the J-frame was introduced to handle the increasingly hot .38 Special round.  This is a 3 digit serial first year production I-frame with half moon front sight and I-frame grips (1/8" shorter than J-frame).  All the right stuff: flat latch, pinned barrel, excellent bore, 95% finish (slight drag ring and two small small spots on cylinder (see photos), good case colors on hammer and trigger, 5 screw frame.  See Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, p. 150 for I-frame/J-frame comparison.  This is the lowest serial number (98X) I have seen.  If you are a S&W  hand ejector collector, this is a pretty good specimen.  Price includes shipping.
