Description:
UNIQUE & SCARCE Antique ALONZO CRULL Upgraded Antique COLT M1877 Revolver

Converted to a MINIATURIZED SINGLE ACTION ARMY

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Alonzo Crull Upgraded Colt Model 1877 Double Action Revolver that has been converted to a miniaturized Single Action Army Revolver, originally manufactured in 1884 in Hartford, Connecticut and subsequently upgraded. This revolver is chambered in .22 and would fire Short, Long, or Long Rifles. The barrel and cylinder are not sleeved but bored from a solid piece of steel. It features a round barrel with a matted rib that retains the front sight blade. The top strap of the frame has a generous and adjustable rear sight installed and both are likewise matte finished to reduce glare. The grip frame has been straightened out from its bird's head profile to the SAA “plow handle” shape. Nicely figured, two-piece walnut grips fill the hand nicely for a smaller framed gun. The action is very nice with a crisp trigger. The serial number can still be observed on the bottom of the frame and the patent dates on the left side. The craftsman put his name on the left side of the barrel.

The gunsmith, Alonzo Crull of Wabash, Indiana, is ranked with the likes of Tommy Haas and George Matthews for his restoration ability as well as converting first generation Single Action Army Colts to .22, but Crull's most notable conversion was his transformation of a Colt Model 1877 Lightning or Thunderer Double Action into a small framed single action in .22. These he began making, and it is said that no one else dared take on the tedious and complex early Colt double actions for this purpose but Crull, in the 1930s, well before Ruger began producing the small frame single action Bearcat in .22. Crull’s craftsmanship is a testament to his skill as a gunsmith and his dedication to preserve the legacy of Colt firearms! This is a very neat, very rare example of serious skill. Crull’s work on Colt firearms is highly regarded among collectors of Colt handguns and are known not only for their aesthetic appeal, but also their superb craftsmanship featuring unique sights and a lightweight barrel.

The overall condition is very fine. Original blued finish as to the Crull remodel. The action is superb. The bore is excellent: shiny bright with sharp rifling. The grips are smooth and solid with nice figure. Markings are sharp. “XXX” is marked on the bottom of the barrel. A fantastic piece!
