The Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 Third Issue is a historic American revolver that represents an important step in the evolution of early cartridge firearms. Produced from the late 1860s into the early 1880s, it was part of Smith & Wesson’s first line of revolvers designed to use self-contained metallic cartridges—an innovation that helped move firearms beyond older percussion cap systems.

This small, single-action revolver is chambered in .22 rimfire and features a tip-up barrel design, allowing the user to load cartridges by pivoting the barrel upward on its hinge. Compared to earlier versions, the Third Issue incorporated stronger materials and design refinements, including a steel frame (replacing earlier brass frames), improved cylinder construction, and better overall durability.

Compact and easily concealable, the Model No. 1 Third Issue was commonly used as a personal defense weapon during its time. It typically has a seven-shot cylinder, a spur trigger (meaning no trigger guard), and a simple grip shape often fitted with wood or hard rubber panels. Barrel lengths varied slightly, but most examples feature a short barrel suitable for pocket carry.

Today, the Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 Third Issue is valued primarily as a collectible firearm. Its historical significance lies in its role in popularizing cartridge revolvers in the United States, making it an important piece for collectors interested in 19th-century firearms development.
