Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Smith & Wesson Model 17-3 Double Action Revolver manufactured in 1972 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Smith & Wesson Model 17, building on its original 1940 design as the K-22 Masterpiece, received iterative engineering updates starting in the late 1950s, marked by dash-number designations to denote manufacturing and performance improvements. These revisions focused on enhancing reliability, ease of production, and safety without altering the core K-frame .22 LR configuration. Subsequent updates continued to refine the revolver's internals with the Model 17-3, introduced in 1967.
This classic Smith & Wesson .22 caliber target revolver had its beginnings back in the early 1930s and is now discontinued, yet it is still an extremely popular item among both shooters and collectors. It serves the needs of target shooters wanting a companion piece to .38 caliber target revolvers as well as filling a niche for a field revolver suitable for small game. In many people’s opinion, a more accurate .22 wheel gun has never been made, and S&W was entirely correct in calling it a Masterpiece.
The overall condition is excellent. Original finish. The action excellent. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Markings are crisp. Both grips show minimal handling wear and maintain well-defined checkering.
