Description:
Synopsis:Important Colt Single Action Army Cavalry Revolver, U.S. Military Inspected, Made 1891, New York Militia Issue, John A. Kopec letter. ANTIQUE!
Description:
Standard configuration Colt Single Action Army revolver manufactured in 1891 during the final year of military production, SN: 140269, caliber .45 Colt, with 7 1/2" blued barrel and cylinder with color case-hardened frame. Fixed blade front sight with traditional notch rear sight. Top of barrel marked “COLT’S PT. F. A. MFG Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.”. Left side of frame with stamped patent dates and “US” positioned below the cylinder area. SN “140269” appears on the bottom of frame, trigger guard, and butt with matching “0266” on outer cylinder, the final digit, that should have been a "9", having been stamped upside down. “2062” stamped on the loading gate. RAC inspector initials under barrel, on the cylinder and frame. Fitted with smooth walnut grips, the left panel bearing a rectangular RAC cartouche; the right panel is marked with a rectangle, lettering not discernable. Complete with letter of authentication from John A. Kopec dated May 9, 2015, who makes the following observations: 1) The revolver was in the last group to have been assembled for the U.S. military, within a hundred revolvers from the end. 2) It was likely issued to the state of New York and properly grouped as one of the "New York Militia" revolvers. 3) Although the barrel has considerably more blue finish than other parts, there is no evidence of its ever having been polished or reblued. 4) Grips are modern-manufactured replacements measuring 2.2 mm too narrow with cartouches having been stamped on the wrong sides. 5) The partial serial number "0269" found in the backstrap channel is a facsimile marking.
Condition:
VG original finish with a thinning blue and faded case colors as typical for a holstered U.S. military revolver that saw extended use and is now 135 years old. As mentioned in the Kopec letter, although the blue on the barrel is better than expected, there is no evidence to suggest an old reblue. Carefully aged reproduction grips that are slightly undersized, the upper portion of the left panel having a missing chip at the lower corner. Near mirror bore. Correct manual mechanics. EXC original Kopeck letter with a crisp seal. ANTIQUE!
Insured shipping fee of $120; package shipped FedEx 2nd Day.
