Walther P1 – 9mm – 5" Barrel – West German Surplus (BMI Marked) – 1965
The Walther P1 was the further development of the Walther P38 of World War II fame. The P1 served as the standard issue sidearm for the German Bundeswehr from 1957 until 2004. The fact that this model was in service for that long is a testament to the ruggedness and reliability of the pistol.
Our pistol (serial #: 279199) has a slide dated 6/65 and a magazine dated 9/64. All visible serial numbers on the pistol match. The right side of the slide is stamped BMI. This indicates that the pistol was owned by the West German Bundesmisisterium des Innern (the Ministry of the Interior. In other words, this pistol was issued either to the federal police or the border protection forces. When surplused, the BMI was sometimes stamped over with an “X". Ours has not been stamped but the BMI mark was scratched to indicate that it had been declared surplus.
The pistol has a 5 inch barrel, fixed sights, an open slide design and a magazine capacity of 8+1. The grips are black composite and the left grip panel has a lanyard loop because of its police and military role. A manual safety / decocker is on the left side of the slide.
The pistol functions in both single and double action modes. The single action trigger has slight takeup and then a clean break at the wall. The double action trigger feels normal for a double action.
The bore on the pistol is good, the barrel is bright and the rifling looks to be good as well. The grips are in Very Good condition, as is the frame. The slide does have some scratches, primarily on the right side.
These pistols were known to be accurate, comfortable and reliable. They’re also fun to shoot and a very neat piece of Cold War history!
