Description:
Guns Listing ID: 645911

The Enfield No.5 Mk I (F), commonly known as the “Jungle Carbine," is a lightweight bolt-action rifle developed by Britain during the later stages of World War II. It is a shortened and modified version of the Lee-Enfield No.4 rifle, designed for use in dense jungle environments such as those found in Southeast Asia.

Key Features
Caliber: .303 British
Action: Bolt-action
Magazine: Detachable 10-round box magazine (typically loaded with stripper clips)
Barrel Length: Approximately 18.7 inches
Overall Length: About 39.5 inches
Weight: Around 7 lbs (lighter than the No.4)
Distinguishing Characteristics
Shortened barrel and receiver for improved handling in close terrain
Conical flash hider to reduce muzzle flash in low-light jungle conditions
Rubber recoil pad for improved comfort during firing
Lightening cuts machined into the receiver and barrel to reduce weight
Folding rear sight calibrated for shorter engagement ranges
Historical Context

Introduced in 1944, the No.5 Mk I saw service with British and Commonwealth forces, particularly in the Pacific theater. Its lighter weight and compact design made it easier to carry in harsh environments, though some soldiers reported increased recoil and concerns about long-range accuracy (sometimes referred to as “wandering zero," though this remains debated among historians).

Collector Notes
Produced primarily by ROF Fazakerley and BSA Shirley
Matching serial numbers and original finish significantly impact historical value
Original accessories (sling, bayonet, etc.) can enhance collectibility
Condition of the bore and stock are key factors in evaluation
